Q. Is it worth restoring an old piano?

There are many factors that go into making a decision about a piano restoration project. They can largely be divided into two main categories.

  1. The Brand, Quality and Condition of the piano
  2. The sentimental or family history associated with the piano.

First we will discuss the brand, quality and condition considerations. If the piano was built by a respected company with outstanding build quality then it may be worth restoring the piano. Brands such as Steinway, Mason & Hamlin, Bechstein, Bluthner, Yamaha, Kawai and others are of excellent quality and rebuilding and restoring these pianos can often make sense. With a piano like this we can achieve excellent results. You can have a piano that looks and sounds brand new for only a fraction of the price of a new piano on the retail market.

Sometimes the piano may be of good quality but may not be a celebrated brand name but the piano belonged to a parent or grand-parent and the family would like to preserve their legacy and their family history by restoring the piano. This is a personal choice and results can often be better than expected. We have restored old pianos that many people would consider junk that have turned out suprisingly well. It is important if you are considering a restoration project to have the piano thoroughly evaluated to determine what would be needed to get the desired result.
